How Not to Move a Mattress

Just when you think you’ve seen it all, people continue to surprise us. We’ve helped move thousands of customers across the Seattle metropolitan area, and beyond. From sofas to bed frames and mattresses, heavy dining room tables and heavy moving boxes, our Seattle residential movers have tackled it all. So, trust us when we say that when it comes to how to move a mattress, there is absolutely a wrong way to do it.

Don’t move it by yourself.

You are going to need at least one of two other people to help you lift and carry the mattress out to your vehicle. They are heavy and bulky – you won’t be able to move it safely on your own.

Don’t put it on your car without straps.

Unfortunately, it’s happens. Moving straps for your mattress run at about $30-60 depending on size and style. It is not too much effort to secure your mattress with these straps vs. recruiting your daredevil friend to pull a superhero stunt to keep them in place.

How not to move a mattress

Don’t lay it on its side – lay it flat.

Leaving a mattress on its side during a move can permanently damage your mattress because of this little thing called gravity. Remember that a mattress is just a bunch of padding put together. If you change the way the mattress sits for an extended period of time, the padding can shift, and you are left with a lopsided mattress. Always lay it flat whenever possible.

Don’t leave your mattress uncovered.

If you’ve ever experienced the awful sensation of bed bugs, this will be a no-brainer. An open-air mattress means that it can get stains, bugs, dust, dirt, water, mold and other unwanted visitors during your move. Make sure you cover your mattress with a durable plastic covering to avoid any unwanted creepy crawlies during bedtime.

Make sure your car is the right size for your mattress.

A king mattress on a sedan is not going cut it. Measure your mattress and make sure the vehicle you have is the right size and can fit whatever size mattress you need for it. If it hangs over the side or the front/back of your car, it can cause serious problems on the road.
