Seattle may be getting a new neighborhood in the coming years as a 25-acre plot of land becomes available for new development. This soon-to-be vacated property is located north of Magnolia bridge and south of Interbay Golf Course.
Previously used by the National Guard as parking for their Humvees, those vehicles will be transferred outside of the city limits. Once that happens, and it might take a while for the National Guard to completely vacate the property, a new Seattle neighborhood may arise.
Ideally located between the Magnolia and Queen Anne neighborhoods, the 25-acre lot will have to be rezoned in order to become a residential community which may be worth it in the long run. Building 20-story apartment towers could earn the state enough money to fund the development of community centers, schools, and parks.
In a public meeting, more than 300 community members discussed the future of the property. Some suggestions included constructing a community sports facility, a park for pet shelters, and a camp of thousands of tiny homes for the city’s homeless. With 25 acres to work with, the lot is big enough for all these things and more.
“Imagine these 25 acres as a dense, climate resilient, economically diverse, energy efficient community, home to 5,000 or more residents with shops, childcare facilities, and a huge park next door.” – Nancy Helm, Seattle Resident1
As of right now, the possibilities for what this valuable piece of land will become are wide open. Consultants for the state are still analyzing the site, it’s opportunities and risk factors. All of which will be incorporated into the final recommendations which are due to be sent to Washington’s Governor Jay Inslee by November 2019.
More public meetings discussing the potential upcoming Seattle neighborhood are also scheduled – the next one is being held on May 15th at the Ballard VFW Hall at 6:00 p.m.
