Packing is arguably one of the worst parts of moving. Depending on how long you’ve been in your current home, you could be packing decades worth of stuff. It can be overwhelming to know where to begin. But thanks to our expert Seattle movers and our renowned Seattle relocation services, you can become an expert packer. Here are our packing tips for an easy, stress-free experience during your next move.
Before you think about packing, take advantage of the opportunity to clean out your home or office. Go through each room, each desk drawer, and each closet to clean out items you don’t use anymore, trash, etc. Separate these items into three piles: items to keep, items to sell or donate, and items to throw away. You can host a yard sale for those items you no longer need to get some cash in your pocket, or do some good and donate them to Goodwill, Salvation Army, or your favorite local charity. Take a trip to the local dump or recycling center for those items to throw away. Then you only have the items you really need and want in your home. Less stuff to pack means less work and less money wasted on moving items you don’t even want anymore.
Never procrastinate on packing- it is a process! Waiting until the week of a move is never a good idea. You’ll be pulling your hair out. Make sure you start early and do things in stages. There’s the cleaning stage we just talked about. Then there is the “décor” stage. Pack up the wall hangings, paintings, fridge magnets, picture frames and other items that are purely for decoration in your home. This may take a couple runs to get it all done. Then you can get into the clothes, bedding, and kitchen/dishware that needs to get packed up. It may take a few weeks to get this done, especially between work and your family responsibilities. So, don’t wait!
Before you put anything in a box, make sure you create a detailed inventory list for all your items. It can be color coordinated with tape, numbers, or written labels on boxes, but just make sure you do it. It’s important to know what box holds what items, otherwise when you start to unpack at your new home, you will be frustrated opening each box to see what it contains. Even something simple like “Kitchenware”, “Bedding”, or “Winter Clothes” can be helpful when it comes to getting settled into your new home.
