We put together our Top 5 Ways to Save Money on Moving Day. Relax. Together. We got this. These are cost cutting tips from the “Bosses” at Established Moving & Storage to help you “skin the cat” and save on your total moving cost.

Here’s what you need to ask yourself about your move: What do I absolutely need my Seattle movers to do?  Answer: The heavy lifting.

You may not have the ability to do everything on this “Top 5 Ways to Save Money on Moving Day” list, but anything you can do will cut corners on the time it takes to complete your move. All movers will charge on some sort of time or weight-based pricing structure.

Tip #1: Do your own packing of the small stuff.

Depending on your situation, if you have the ability to move all your packed cartons, this will make a major impact on saving money on the total cost of your move. If you need to your movers to transport your self-packed cartons, make sure your items are packed in the right boxes, e.g. dishes and breakables in a dish pack and books in a book box.

Make sure your boxes are sealed flat, so the movers can stack them 4-5 at a time on each dolly trip to and from truck. If boxes aren’t sealed, this could add considerable amount of time to your move. Have movers put all your boxes stacked in one room in your new home to save time. If you need the movers to distribute your boxes throughout the house, make sure you identify each box and to which room they will go. This will eliminate the movers asking you on every dolly load of boxes: Where do these boxes go? That question adds unnecessary billed time to your move.

Tip #2: Complete your own disassembly and reassembly of household items.

Complete all your own “disassembly and reassembly” of household items such as:

• Bedding
• Mirrors behind dressers
• Dining table legs and leafs
• Any glass shelving
• Transport the glass yourself

If it can break it needs to be packed (This will take time and material charges if the movers do it). This is really a good one. If you can do this one you will save a considerable amount money on your move. This is truly leaving the heavy lifting to us.

Tip #3: Clear the way for your movers.

Make sure parking areas are clear by your home, so the moving van can park as close to your entrance as possible. Less walk…Less time spent by your movers, and in turn a cheaper move 😊

Tip #4: Be prepared!

If you live in an apartment building, make sure you reserve elevator for your move date. If your crew is sharing the elevator with other residents or other movers, this is a sure way to KILL the clock. If this happens, you won’t be spending any money on yourself…It will ALL go to the mover☹ Have your key to your new home prior to the crew arrival. If the crew is waiting for you to gain access to your home… this is another time killer. The more organized and prepared you can be for moving day, the better. You get the point.

Tip #5: Schedule your move on a “non-peak” day.

If you do ALL the above and then this fifth tip, this will be the icing on the cake. You will have achieved saving the most amount of money possible and still got a professional service! Schedule your move on a “Non-Peak” day. You will pay a premium to move on highly sought-after days, like the last three days or first three days of the month, Saturdays and Sundays.
