A Guide to Packing Electronics Before Moving

This list of packing tips from our moving company can help you save a lot of time, and most importantly, money.

  • Backup Your Files: Before you figure out how to pack a computer for a move, it’s very important to back up your files. One single hit during a move could be the end
  • Remove Batteries: Make sure to remove any batteries from remotes or accessories. Battery corrosion can cause significant damage to electronic components
  • Detach Wires: Although it might seem like a time-saver to leave accessories connected, prolonged metal-to-metal contact can lead to problems, especially in unregulated storage conditions. Be sure to unplug cables from devices and wrap them neatly, securing them with velcro cable ties, zip ties, etc. You can label them or tape them to the back of their respective device so they don’t get mixed up or lost.
  • Use Original Packing If Possible: Whenever possible, use the original packaging for your electronics. The original boxes come with pre-shaped foam pieces and custom inserts designed to keep items from shifting during transit. If the original boxes are no longer available, select moving boxes that are large enough to accommodate the item with ample space for packing peanuts.
  • Protect Parts from Dust: Bubble wrap electronics and tape paper over fans and vents to prevent dust particles from entering the electronic cases.
  • Use Blankets: For large flat-screen TVs, cover them with padded moving blankets. Store these items standing up against a wall to provide support. Do not lay them flat or stack items on the screen as these methods will likely damage them.
  • Climate Control: Electronic equipment is highly sensitive to temperature extremes. Cold weather can cause metal parts to contract and weaken soldered components while heat can damage electronics by expanding metal parts and increasing humidity. Ensure that electronics are stored in a temperature-controlled environment to protect them from extreme conditions. Our long-distance movers suggest using adequate packing materials to insulate the box from extreme temperatures.
